Homework Plan

University Park Homework Plan

The University Park Staff is committed to supporting children in realizing their full academic, social and emotional potential. An essential component in working to meet this goal is the establishment of a strong partnership between staff, students and their families. We believe that homework should be purposeful, reflect the rich instruction in our classrooms, and provide a vehicle for increased communication between staff, students and families. All homework assignments at University Park are designed to provide students with opportunities to practice academic skills, construct new meaning from content, instill foundational study skills and bridge school learning into the home environment.

Parents are encouraged to support students’ organization of homework tasks and completion of individual assignments. Specifically, we encourage parents to:

  • Provide students with an appropriate environment to complete homework.
  • Monitor and support student homework time.
  • Assist students with time management.
  • Prompt and encourage students to complete homework, but avoid doing the work for the student.
  • Communicate concerns and/or questions directly to the teacher in a positive, proactive way to maintain an effective home to school partnership.

When completing homework, University Park students are encouraged to:

  • Do your best.
  • Ask questions when you don't understand how to complete the work.
  • Ask questions when you don't understand the purpose of the homework.
  • When you are completing a homework assignment, try to focus just on that assignment.
  • Share your learning with your parents and your teachers.

University Park’s school wide and grade level homework plans will be communicated annually to all parents at Back to School Night. On this evening, individual teachers will provide parents with a copy of our school site plan and will clearly communicate details of the classroom homework policy including: homework expectations, how and when homework is factored into student grades, and how to respond if homework demands feel excessive or students are struggling with work.
In an effort to ensure that all students have access to the materials, resources and supports needed to successfully complete school homework, University Park provides all students daily access to the school library during students’ lunch time. Additionally, each classroom visits the library weekly with their classroom teacher to learn how to effectively utilize the library media center. We also offer an after school homework club for all students to receive individualized and/or group support in completing assignments by trained school staff familiar with school curriculum.
No student will have his/her grade reduced or lose academic credit for any excused absence when missed assignments and tests are satisfactorily completed within a reasonable period of time. For more information please see Education Code 48980. In the event a student is suspended, the student’s teacher may require the student to complete any/all assignments and tests missed during the suspension. For further information please see Education Code 48913.
It is recognized that academic curriculum represents one component of student development. Students are encouraged to engage in other beneficial activities outside of school as well as enjoy unstructured family time as part of their comprehensive development. University Park acknowledges that students need time without homework assignments and will schedule such breaks accordingly.
