Test Taking Tips for Northwood Students

Fitness:

  • Get your rest.  Doctors say that most young people need 7 to 11 hours of sleep to be at their best.
  • Eat a power breakfast.  It is hard to think if your stomach is growling.
  • Get plenty of exercise. It makes you more alert, makes you stronger, helps you think more clearly and increases your energy level.

Action:

  • Avoid rushing on the day of the test.
  • Have your clothes and books ready the night before.
  • Leave smart watches at home.
  • Arrive to school on time and ready.
  • Don’t spend too much time on any one question.

Alertness:

  • Listen carefully to instructions.

Determination:

  • Read all answers for each question before choosing an answer.

Confidence:

  • Believe in yourself.  You can do it!

Personal Best:

  • Remember to give 100% effort to do the best you can do.

We thank you for the encouragement and support you will show your students during the testing period.

IUSD Residency Verification

Dear Parent or Guardian:

The Irvine Unified School District will once again require residency verification for all IUSD students enrolling for the 2018-19 school year. This process is an annual legal requirement in California and it helps our district ensure that all available resources are spent efficiently and effectively to the benefit of our Irvine families. Moreover, these additional steps will help provide a full and precise accounting of our student population as we review staffing for the coming year.

By completing the following forms for each of your students, you will be making a formal declaration that your child lives within IUSD’s attendance boundaries.

For your added convenience, the forms are linked above allowing you to fill them out and print them at home. Completed residency forms should be turned in to Northwood Elementary by March 12, 2018. (note date change)

A list of acceptable documents included on the Residency Verification Form can also be found by clicking here

Northwood Elementary is excited to use

Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success

for Character Education

Character Education:

Harper for Kids Youth Character Development Program

Northwood Elementary School is proud to partner with Harper for Kids to teach our students important character traits from legendary UCLA Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and his definition of success for children which is: “Success is happiness in your heart because you made the effort, 100%, to do your best!”

Coach Wooden believed and taught that the most important responsibility each of us had to ourselves was to do everything we could to achieve our own potential. He offered his Pyramid of Success and his definition of Success as a guide, stepping stones to help young people understand what it really takes to make the effort – 100% – to fulfill their potential and do their best.

Each month, our students will focus on one or two character traits from Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Positive examples of each character trait will be recognized with “Success Tickets” given by staff members. Classroom lessons will reinforce elements of the Pyramid of Success through readings of Coach Wooden’s children’s book, Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success and other integrated activities. Additionally, whole school assemblies will feature character traits from Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.

Harper for Kids is a children’s nonprofit organization founded by Tim & Peanut Louie Harper. Harper for Kids mission is to to teach children important life skills that will empower them to achieve their personal best in life and to help schools incorporate Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success into their character education.

We are excited about working with Harper for Kids to bring focused character education to our students. For more information about Harper for Kids and Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success, please visit their website: www.harperforkids.org/HFK/pyramid_of_success.html.

Traffic Safety

crossing guard

Our parking lot can accommodate our staff but our school was designed for a walking community. With many parents driving, we are experiencing excessive traffic and delayed pick up for kids while fostering an atmosphere that could become dangerousfor our community. After observing our traffic patterns, I would like for you to consider one or more of the following options in order to provide a safer environment for our Northwood students, staff and parents:

  • Walk - It's healthy, environmentally friendly, and a great way to bond with others.

Parents can wait in one of three areas:

  1. In front of the school
  2. Next to the park (must stay on grass - the blacktop is for instructional use)
  3. Next to entrance off Lewis (please stay near wall)
  • Park on the street OR in our our parking lot (pick up only) - Get out and walk your child to your car. This may cost a few extra minutes, but it will reduce the traffic back up and ensure your child is safely boarded inyour vehicle.
  • Park Behind the School - There is a long stretch of sidewalk. If you drive in off of Trabuco, left on Lewis and then on Lindberg, you can park along the long stretch behind our school. Agree on a meeting place and have your child scan and look for your car behind our school - this is a great practice for upper grade students
  • Please be respectful to our neighbors and do not block their driveway.

Please note that there is no supervision for students and students must be picked up within 10 minutes of dismissal.
